In Cangxi County, deep in northern Sichuan, a humble local pear has become a testbed for digital agriculture. By weaving technology into every step—from orchard to dinner plate—the county is forging a new path for rural revitalisation powered by smart farming.
Smart Orchards, Real‑Time Data

At the provincial‑level Yunshan Town Snow Pear Modern Agricultural Park, rows of pear trees are thriving, heavy with emerald fruit. This is peak harvest season, and farmers move briskly among the trees, picking not just juicy pears but also the satisfaction of a good year.
In the past, every tree grew differently, and quality was left to the whims of nature. Now, local agricultural technicians promote standardised planting systems—flat trellises and Y‑shaped frames—that allow better sunlight and air circulation. The result? Higher quality fruit and, equally important, easier mechanised operations.
Data, Not Guesswork

At the Yizhai Village Agricultural Service Centre, a large smart screen flashes real‑time readings on soil moisture, temperature, and sunlight hours. With monitoring devices scattered across the orchards, staff can check the “vital signs” of the fields anytime via computer or mobile phone, and receive precise, actionable advice.
“The dashboard and sensors let us track soil conditions and weather data instantly,” says Shen Yudao, deputy director of Yizhai Village’s village committee. “We’ve shifted from relying on experience to relying on data. That’s already boosted our efficiency by over 30%, and the percentage of top‑grade fruit has risen sharply.”
Selling Smarter

Growing good fruit is only half the battle; selling it well is the other. Yunshan Town has embraced a dual strategy of e‑commerce and cold‑chain logistics. Three local live‑streaming influencers have been cultivated, and cold‑storage capacity now totals 800 tonnes. In the first half of this year alone, online sales of specialty fruits exceeded ¥2 million, an 18% year‑on‑year increase.
The numbers speak volumes: Yunshan’s pear industry generates ¥84 million in annual output, employs nearly 3,500 people, and adds an average of ¥22,800 per household. What was once a humble local product has evolved into a “golden nugget” of smart agriculture, anchoring rural prosperity and lifting incomes across the community.
A County‑Wide Movement
This digital transformation isn’t just a Yunshan affair—it’s a county‑wide symphony. On the production side, Cangxi has bred six new premium pear varieties, with a total planting area of 16,500 mu (about 1,100 hectares) and an annual output of over 125,000 tonnes, generating a comprehensive output value of ¥2.8 billion and involving 85,000 farming households. In processing, the county has set up 16 primary processing stations and three deep‑processing enterprises, turning out 25 products across six categories—including NFC pear juice—that more than double the value‑added. On the sales front, 85 e‑commerce livestream teams have been incubated, over 70 local online brands have emerged, and 783 online stores are now active, boosting farmers’ annual income by ¥160 million on average. A county‑wide cold‑chain network of 441 storage facilities and three dedicated township logistics routes ensures that fresh produce reaches consumers without a hitch.

From data‑driven decisions on smart screens to sensor‑based monitoring in the fields; from standardised planting to livestreaming that sells Cangxi pears nationwide; from cold‑storage preservation to high‑speed logistics—every link in the chain has been digitally re‑imagined. The pear’s “smart journey” is quickly becoming a signature success story for the specialty fruit belt in the Qinba Mountain area.
